Linux is great for hacking. Getting used to it may take time but it will be worth it.
The great thing about linux is the amount of freedom it gives you, change anything and do whatever. Kernels and most distros are open source too.
And plus, it's extremely hard to infect it.

There's no right or wrong, It depends on one's overall usability.

I have many Linux distros Installed on my VM, and change from one to the other as needed.

Yes Linux is good. It depends on what you need to do. If you want to know Linux you should do the following:

- Get VirtualBox. It is free.

- Install Ubuntu on it. I say Ubuntu because it is very easy for new people and because the support community is big. There are guides for setting up Ubuntu on VirtualBox. Make sure to get guest sessions.

- Watch videos on the command line. You must know the command line in Linux or you will not get Linuxs true power. Learn very simple things like cd, ls, cat, grep, and other tools. This will all seem very basic and useless right now but it will help you understand the basics.

- Then move to networking and know netstat and stuff like nmap.

- Then you can look at using tools. Once you know Ubuntu you should look at tools on Kali Linux.

Install multiple Linux distros In a VM, navigate your way around and see whether they suit your needs.

If you don't like any, simply delete the VHD.

Linux is useful for programmers and hackers alike because it allows you to deeply modify the system to do specifically what you need. Basically just the freedom.

If you don't really have either of those applications in mind, Linux isn't overly useful to most people unless they're looking to try and disconnect from 'the botnet' I suppose.
