Food Items are the easiest to SE.
Simply saying that you felt very sick "Immediately" after consumption, works almost each and every time.

you think it’ll work with candy too? i feel like if i complain about feeling ill they’ll ask me to send back what’s unopened and left.
dna would mean i haven’t received ANY of the items i ordered.

Absolutely.
It Is a consumable Item.

As far as you're concerned, you've eaten the lot and felt extremely sick thereafter. Unless they want you to regurgitate It (so to speak), you can't return what you don't have.
Alternatively, candy Is extremely light, hence box them without adding a weight substitute.

Boxing a company, means to send an empty box- without the Item.

The DNA Is carrier-based, hence considered a universal method that works with just about every company.
I always suggest to opt for the method that you're most comfortable and confident with. If you're happy to go with the DNA, then do exactly that.

In doing so, will the package be delivered to another drop off point (example, post office) or left at your premises without a signature?

the delivery information doesn’t stay what will happen. when i se’d my ram sticks they just left it outside my door after i didn’t open. both the ram sticks and this american candy courier is DPD so i’m assuming they’ll do the same?

If the carrier Is the same as your previous experience, I'd say they'll do the same by following company protocol.
