What do I do if a company says I need to exchange my broken item for a new one with the delivery driver?
Is there anything I can tell the delivery driver to be able to get the item without giving him anything?

Isn't the delivery driver delivering the package (box/parcel with the goods enclosed) and not the Item per se?

You can always see things like that you had an exploding battery, corrosive material, bio-hazard blabla, just make sure the people don't want to take it with them.

This is a classic example of the company calling your bluff. If you agree to it, they are assuming you are telling the truth and they will just send you a replacement. I have had experience with this many times while working - when we find a faulty part and ring the supplier, they tell us to give the old part to the delivery driver when he will drop off the replacement; they never ask for it and just deliver the item no problem.
If the driver does actually request the item, just come up with some excuse and be confident. He will most likely believe you.

Thanks you all for your help. I'm not sure what I will say (if I have to say anything at all) but probably something biohazard.
