Is there any leeway in the differing weight? Like if the ordered item weighed 500g and the returned item weighed 400g would that be fine? Or do they have to weigh exactly the same?

It's generally fine.

Some companies/carriers tend to round It up to It's nearest weight, so the exactness Is not always represented.

Yep I've gotten confirmation that it'll be in once they get the item back. It was about 40g lighter but doubt it matters.

I've worked for a carrier company In my locality quite a while back- for the sole purpose of experiencing how their Internals operate, so my post Is based on what I witnessed. I had no Interest whatsoever In the job Itself.

Very nice, do update us once they have checked your return package and the refund has been processed. I’m curious to know if they’ll notice that they do not stock the charity shop book.

Oh they stock it alright, I had to make sure of that. Not sure if they would check it or not but it'd be silly to just send any old book. It had to look in new condition and be sold and shipped by amazon

Adding to your comment on "field research", cleaners/janitors purposely find employment to collect data. Believe It or not, a given cleaner who's worked In an organization for 10 minutes, will have more access to Information than an employee serving the company for 10 years. How? A cleaner (for example) has access to waste baskets of the accounts department, HR, CEO, MD, etc. So If documents are not securely shredded, rather than emptying everything In the dumpster, the cleaner takes the plastic bags home and sifts through all the paperwork.

An employee Isn't going to snoop around "every"one of the aforementioned waste baskets are they? They have no reason to- a cleaner does by way of (seemingly) doing their job.
