RE: Expectations in life. #11
My parents had/have some decent expectations of me, but not anything crazy. I was never forced to do anything I outright wouldn't want to and I have always been given a reasonable amount of freedom in deciding what I'd like to do. They've never forced their opinions on me or anything like that, either. They are pretty supportive, all around, and aren't forcing me to become a lawyer or doctor. I am, however, expected to receive a university degree. That being said, my aspirations tend to be similar to theirs. If I wanted to become a writer, or something that might receive less pay, I would understand if they were against it. I don't personally have any crazy high expectations career wise, although I do plan on being as happy as I can. I think everyone should be that way.

I live, thankfully, in a very accepting household. If I told my dad and mom that I was gay, they would accept it as part of me. Our family has gay friends and are very relaxed about it. We aren't religious but my dad was raised in a very catholic household, so whenever we have huge family dinners, its kinda ackward because i dont know any of the phrases. But no one really cares anyways, my grandpa does the hail mary thing and we eat. My parents are very nice and help me out with anything i want to do, but they dont give me any money, they expect me to make it myself. I don't get an allowance, which has given me a much different perspective of money since ive had to pay for almost everything i own for myself. All my games and my PC ive had to pay for myself. I am happy and angry that that did this to me, they were raised this way themselves so they expect me to do the same as them. They don't expect me to become a doctor or a surgeon, but they will pay for part of my college. All they really expect of me is to get good grades, finish my homework/projects, help around the house and get at least 2 hours of hard physical exercise. That's why i usually work out every day.

My parents come from an asian background, so even though I was born in the UK and have never been to Asia, the mentality is more or less forced upon me. My parents think that forums are 'online hacking communities full of peadophiles and creeps'... Which is kinda true for SL.

Spoiler:
Lmfao, I kid.

Because of this, my parents expect me to become a Doctor, a Lawyer, or another job that stereotypically needs higher education, like a pharmacist or a surgeon.

What I plan to do, is a CS degree in University and the penetration testing course by offensive security. Then I plan to become a professional penetration tester.

Neither of my parents have a university degree, and they do not expect me to get one, though they would like me to get one. I myself am not quite sure yet.

My father is a good example of this mentality - he doesn't have the nicest car, the best house or lots of money, but he really likes being in nature, especially forests. So his job allows him to go to forests and such every now and then and he enjoys his life because of that.

It's still surprising to find out that people still think that money will make you happy. There are quite a few people I know who live high-class, above average lives and they aren't any better or worse off compared to regular income families. That's not to say it can or can't make you happy, it's just not the key to it.

Yeah, the point is that money can help oh become happier ", but by itself it won't make you happy. I mean if you're a person who loves traveling and seeing things, you'll need money to do that, but if you don't have the time you might as well not have the money.

Precisely. That's why I'm going for a job that I enjoy.

You can't travel if you're working full time, especially when programming.
