Correct me if I am wrong, Windows 3.1 was not an OS... it was a program (tool) that ran on DOS 6.2 as far as I remember, but I got your point, I come from the same era (I started with 80286 PC)

My first graphical OS I used was Windows 95 (I think)

Peace

You are correct that Windows 3.1 wasnt /really/ an operating system in itself... but for the most part people refer to it as such - However if you want to argue for that point, than neither Windows 95, 98, and ME were operating systems either? They were merely a GUI wrapped around DOS as well. This would be similar to how XFCE/Gnome/KDE arent really part of the core linux operating system

Of course you could also argue though that those GUI wrappers extended the functionality of the base operating system and as such could be called an Operating system. Is Xubuntu an operating system? Its referring to the Window Manager as well as the core operating system as a package. But the underlying operating system is really Ubuntu. Or if you get really technical, its GNU/Linux So if Windows 95/98 are not operating systems, neither are Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and other derivatives that differentiate based only on the interface? See where I am going? The interface has nothing to do with the core operating system.

@Geoff, you are right ... I agree with your point of view (I didn't see it that way)

I think that the worse thing I did was to stuck with Windows for a while (years) because I didn't know about Linux... I was a kid living in a country where there was nothing but... noting! It was a miracle for me to have a PC which cost about 1700 USD at that time, which for us was a huge amount of money... and couple of friends with whom I shared the same interest (Computers), I should admit that I was really lucky!

Peace

Well im quite young so i got windows me with 128 mb of ram and i remember that cpu was terribly slow and hdd was 5gb Smile I was coming from a library to home. And there was it - standing on the table with ancient, huge and black monitor. After a week i did explored almost every single item and option in control pannel :d So after some time i wanted to make it faster and i did tweaked it. That even mby raised my interest about how computer does work.

My first Windows OS was Vista, as for a lot of my childhood I wasn't into computers until around the age of 12 when I got into computers and Windows Vista was the current OS. Looking back, I notice how bad it really was.

My first OS was Windows 3.1 back In the very early 90s.

My system had "4MB" (yes 4MB) of Ram, and a 500MB HDD.
