update: was never sent a crime reference number so i made up a fake excuse to apple saying i found them and they accepted the return request and got my money back at least. but good thing to know that the one time exception is gone.
One time exception isn't gone, EB is most likely gone for now with people abusing it. I was able to use the one time exception a week ago easily.
The broken item method works well with apple (got to be a bit creative though) got them for a watch and ipad like a month ago, did the same with Target for a ipad about 2 months back.
Got too many methods, I don't know which one to use today.

Photoshopped a picture of the item to make it look like the screen was smashed.

I just said it would be dangerous (cutting hazard) to send something with broken parts through the mail.

To help even more, you can say you injured yourself from the broken pieces, and had to dispose of it for safety reasons. Oh and my ipad was like 350+ I believe, they might be more tough if it's one of those 1k+ tablets.
