Told to contact courier #1
So I boxed a store with tape (I'd rather not say which, they're a big company but with a relatively small online shop), but they've told me that since the items weren't returned to them they can't do anything and that I should get in contact with the courier I shipped with (Hermes) to make a claim.

Is there anything I can do to get around this? I think the compensation value is only £50 for Hermes.

I would read their limitation of liability and see if they are responsible for lost incoming items. You could dispute through PayPal or your bank. Why do you not want to contact the courier.
By any means necessary I will get paid

This ^

If they're responsible, then they're obligated to handle your claim.

I've checked their terms and they say 'we have no liability (whether in negligence or otherwise) for any loss not reasonably foreseeable by us'. I've had a look around at their FAQs and it doesn't mention anything about accepting liability for lost incoming items.

My alternative now is to get in touch with the carrier who'll start an investigation (compensation is capped at £50 though). I boxed the company using tape (unbranded), so would this be the best option now?

Well, can't you do a chargeback via your bank? It depends how much you paid for it really.

Their following statement Is quite broad, which can be Interpreted In more ways than one.
Quote:for any loss not reasonably foreseeable by us
What's their definition of "not reasonably foreseeable?". This question Is targeted at them and not yourself.

Contact the company and ask them to clearly clarify my question above, and whether It conclusively applies to the circumstances of your claim. And If so, how.
