I have managed to be successful with my attempt but it took a bit of work.

I orginally used their whats app support service to trouble shoot the headphones. I used the same method saying I woke up after chargeing it and the battery had leaked.
I then called them cause it had taken a full day to just send a few messages. The phone conversation concluded with them decideing my claim warranted a replacement. They instructed me that I had to send all the accessories and headset.
I told them that in the UK that we can't send damaged batteries via the mail which he responded that UPS provided the service to post it and I must send it back to them before they send a replacement.
I'm leaning towards calling again and saying that I contacted ups and the representative said that you can't post damaged batteries that have leaked. If that doesn't work boxxing them. The weight I believe doesn't demand dry ice.
Any alternatives you can think of.
Appreciate the help cheers
Quick edit
Possibley could say the battery is expanding and I don't feel safe sending it and if they ask just send corrupt photos
Where did you claim to have bought it from? Thinking of giving this a go myself, but don't know how to get around the fact that if it was bought from a store it should be returned there.

I said it was a gift and it took a lot of phone calls to different departments and some impersonating of staff from different departments and of UPS. Best of luck but I believe they are clamping down on this now from the people I spoke to they said they have received way above average battery leaking issues being reported so go with another issue.
FYI
When I originally read this I thought it was about SE'ing Bose so that's who I did. Got my self some QC 35 II in the post now

Well I'm in the middle of am SE over the Sony equivalent of the headphones that you successfully SE'd. The Sony customer support team are clowns so hopefully a UPS impersonation won't be necessary - congrats on pulling that off. They are taking thier time 'investigating' my case, and seem more interested in what caused the failure than sending me a replacement. How long did you spend emailing them?
The recent increase in battery failures could be explained as a faulty batch of batteries, not just an influx of scammers.

Yes, they now want to organise a collection of the faulty headset FFS. Thinking that I should just tell them that I disposed of it to avoid a house fire or for safety reasons or something. They will probably end the case and refuse a refund, but I can't see what else to do.

Email the courier asking whether or not it is safe to post this item. If it's a leaking battery its classified as a hazardous material by UPS who Im guessing is the courier. Call them to ask whether it's safe to post it say how its classified as a hazardous material and ask like your double checking and playing it safe you don't want to get in trouble. Mention how the Royale mail refused to post this item. Ask ups or whoever it is for Email confirmation they won't accept this parcel and pass that on to sony.
