To root a Gingerbread device, check out this tool on XDA Developers. Simple to use, you should have no problems. I've rooted two Gingerbread devices with this. You will need to downgrade to 2.3.2 however.

To install a custom ROM, check out that site. There are dozens of tutorials available. Does your model support 4.1? You might not be able to run it. If not, the best you'll get is an unofficial port which can beunstable.

Be warned, you can easily brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing. If you are unsure about anything, just leave it. I'll give a more detailed response when I have access to a computer.

I don't understand why you are having problems joining that forum.

Anyway, it's only a must to join so you can download files, it is still possible to browse the forums and check if there are any guides for what you are trying to do.

the search of 8181 or "bravo" did not show ideal results, so maybe more digging is needed or that particular forum does not have the guide.

also to answer the initial question "how can i tell if my phone is rooted"
1. install a bash shell and try sudo
2. install a root checker
