Couldn’t someone just use the service and reverse engineer it?

Ref service rarely use some private unknown meth. They just use the usual meth everyone knows but people who are unsure or scared about doing it themselves pay someone else to do it.

Can’t those people who use the service see how the ref was done and then just do it themselves?

Yes, but these refunders aren't that worried about it, because they know their target market and aren't worried about it.

These types are targeting a few specific kinds of people:

Those who don't know much about refunding/are very fresh and want it done for them

Those who don't know much about refunding/are very fresh and are too lazy to take the time to do research, and want it done for them

Those who have little to no confidence in their SE-ing ability and want someone else to do the "hard work" for them

Those who have convinced themselves that the refunder knows something they aren't capable of finding out/a private method, or that SE-ing is "too risky/difficult" and want someone to do the work for them

They're not concerned about these people "taking" the method and doing it for themselves, because if they were going to do that, they wouldn't be hitting up the refunder in the first place.


Some of these refunders are offering FTID/boxing services, and for some, those methods seem a lot harder to learn, do right, and require more work than they're willing to put in, so they'd rather pay the fee and have it done by someone who has a better guarantee that it won't fail.

Those people aren't going to "take" the method because they won't have learned it just by going through the process with the paid service, and those people appreciate the "peace of mind" that comes from someone else doing the leg work/boxing for them.


For the refunders using simple methods - DNA/PEB/etc. - of course anyone using the service can turn around and "take" that method, but it's such a widely known, simple method that anyone lazy enough to pay a refunder - instead of doing some simple research and trial and error themselves - is probably going to keep going back because it's "easy".


Those of us who know better have been doing our own SE's - and learning from our mistakes when/if we fail - just fine, and would never be tempted to pay a refunder for something we know we either can already do ourselves or can learn how to do pretty easily.


I can understand why some people opt to pay a refunder for boxing/FTID services - not something I personally would spend on, and not a method I personally use - because there is a bit more knowledge needed to execute certain labels/methods "correctly" but again it's nothing you can't learn and practice, it just takes some extra time and effort.


As well, and I say this in the nicest way possible - Some people are simply... not the brightest... and don't have the kind of social skills needed to pull off a SE.
There are people who freeze up on the phone, can't sound professional on a call or in an email to save their lives, don't lie well, can't come up with a story/improv on the spot/under pressure, etc.
These people have no business handling their own SE's until they can learn these skills - and for these people, it may seem more appealing to pay a refunder than work at it. To each their own.

To your original question in the OP:

Clearly yes, these refunders are learning their methods from somewhere/someone, and testing them out/honing these methods through trial and error.
There are Telegram channels, forum boards, other groups, etc. where someone may share a method or develop methods, and those methods get passed around and/or sold.
I began SE-ing without any knowledge of what to even call it a looooong time ago - DNA'ing before I knew there was a term for it and long before I looked to see if communities existed for this type of thing. It stands to reason that people have found methods through their own creativity and trial and error, just as many have found them on online boards/groups and practiced at them, getting "good" enough to feel they can monetize the service for those too lazy/uninformed to do it themselves.
I see "private methods" being offered/sold all the time, and most of them are just variations of commonly known methods freely shared here - some are blatant scams, others are just tweaks or exploits that aren't as commonly known, but become widely shared, and eventually patched.
