My 1 year scuffle with the 2FApocalypse, and a twist - phyrrus9 - 04-04-2020 So a little over a year ago Apple started forcing everybody into 2FA for all devices. Like everybody else, I had no idea what my security questions were, and to reset them I'd need to enter some other info (like my birthdate). Well, the thing is, I made the account well over a decade ago, and had no idea what lie I put in, resulting in a lockout. So, I spent the last year being constantly (multiple times a day) reminded to enter my icloud password, however doing so simply tells me im locked out. Finally, I found a buried portal that allowed me to reset everything by using a text sent to my phone. Quickly remapped the google voice number I knew I used and got it unlocked. So, everything was all good now, right? Nope. Here's the twist. Apple released 11.3 in haste, and during some of the updates afterwards it has a tendency to fry some of the audio ICs on the iPhone 7 and 7+, mine was among the effected. This isn't a software issue, it's a hardware one, the chip is dead. I got ahold of support, they told me they'd fix it for 2-3x the cost of a replacement, prompting me to send an email to Tim Cook. I actually got a prompt call back from that email, and I was basically told "you're in the software business, you understand how things can turn when they're in the wild" (I might upload that recorded call at some point) So yeah. I bought a replacement that isn't effected, but seriously, Steve Jobs would have never allowed that to happen. Might be wrong, but aren't there ongoing lawsuits for that model? Only Apple guilty of this? I'm not aware of any, but I suppose it's possible. I'm just baffled at why the executives decided to call me just to tell me they weren't going to do anything. Seems like a waste of corp money to me. RE: My 1 year scuffle with the 2FApocalypse, and a twist - Drako - 04-04-2020 And that right there is why you should never purchase an Apple product. None of my friends have Android phones. They all laugh at me when the subject of Apple VS Android comes up, but in the end, Android is the winner. Cheaper (depending on what you're looking for), products that tend to last longer, especially with a great case, performance that can match Apple (again, depending on what you buy), and stuff like that never occurs. As long as you buy from a manufacturer that has a reputable support record, you'll do just fine. Android has always been cheaper, with more customization, and easy to root. I had several iPhones, including the iPhone 3. Back in 2008 you couldn't even have a wallpaper without jailbreaking. Won't judge anyone for preferring iOS now, as it's a case of personal preference. That said, there's still limitations. I don't hate people that use iOS, I just prefer using Android. iOS is a bit more user friendly, but that always comes off as a caveat to me. When something is "user friendly" that usually means a lot of features and customization is ripped right out. |
