free VPN are not great. depending what you plan on doing... cyberghost is only 5 bucks a month. or pay for the 40 dollar edward snowden edition

Hello @blackeagle , I will describe you what is happening and tell you what to do. Although the solution on this have been tested out from me, its been a long time but I think it will work and I am 99.99% sure.

The fact that you have installed allready Linux and Windows on your machine and it is asking you everytime to choose on which OS you would like to boot with (using grub probably) means that you have two separated partitions.

So when you will reinstall Windows on the machine, you will probably pick and format the partition that was containing windows in the past.(basicly this is what you should do)

After you have done that, windows installation works like they install there bootloader and doesn't considering other oses and partitions except the one that you have fresh installed the windows. So the default windows bootloader then will be installed and configured to manage only the windows partition (that is the problem). Though your linux partition will stay untouched.

Then the way I do it (of course there are other ways) to reinstall grub and take in consider both partition is to boot a distro of your choice (I preffer Kali Linux) that will be able boot in live mode. Open a terminal. Take root privilages, and type down the follow:

STEP 1
Code:
lsblk
This will show you the whole HDD partioning layout. You will see and remember the Linux root partition from there. (For the sake of completeness here the root partition is the one that have a slash '/' on the mount point column MOUNTPOINT)

STEP 2
Code:
grub-install /dev/<Linux partition>
This will install the grub boot loader to Linux partition. You will go like this, lets say you found out from the previous command that Linux partition is '/dev/sda1' you will go:
Code:
grub-install /dev/sda
You will type down what you found without the ending number.

STEP 3
Code:
update-grub; reboot;
This will generate a new grub configuration file, then it will reboot the system.
Now disconnect the usb/cd and boot from the HDD again.

You are done.
Enjoy dual boot.
I hope this helped.

When I was new to linux I booted mine off drive C: in windows. But used Wubi to install ubuntu. It was good but then I wanted to learn how to create my own partitions later so I did and decided to try ubuntu on it's own partition.

If your scared of creating new partitions, then use wubi. Else if you got guts. Go the full way.
