So if someone has a cowlick and short hair, it either stands up to where you can't put it down or it grows in an abnormal direction.
Mine isn't bad, it's just a section of my hair sticks up a little when I get it cut.

I usually use hair dryer and get my hair how I want it and then I spray it with my moms hairspray..

Unfortunately, hair gel is the only opportunity for me to make my hair look as I want it to be... I don't like short haircuts and when my hair is long its really hard to manage with it without any remedies. I use different gels, the last one I've purchased is Redken (found the recommendation here). It's rather effective but I don't like the smell of it. Actually, all those gels have an unpleasant smell...

I won't lie, I love doing my hair. I have a messy choppy brit-rock style though and I really don't like to use Gel since it makes my hair feel wet, greasy, and hard as a rock.
I'd suggest using pastes, I prefer the dry medium-hold pastes to shape it and then hit it with some hairspray to keep it in place.
OldSpice makes some good hair products of both Gels and Pastes.

If you want a messy finish to your hair I would recommend buying a hair powder, I found it to be the best styling product I have used.
