RE: Do we need a "God" to act morally? - thomas pendrake - 02-13-2014 Perhaps morality comes from the presence of God within us, as well as cultural instruction. I believe that I have a soul, and that soul is part of God. As a Physicist I am aware that the probability that creation is an accident is vanishingly small. Creation as an accident may be a small possibility, but what is the probability we were designed and created by one man (assuming a god) and put here to live? I think our morality is based on the cultural adaptations we've endured. Let's look at a fallacy, such as the Adam & Eve tale. If morality was there at that point in time, why did they do the wrong thing while knowing it was wrong? RE: Do we need a "God" to act morally? - Tersuss - 02-13-2014 I agree with you wholeheartedly, the very idea that as the most dominant and intelligent species on this planet that we need some form of magical man/woman that lives in the clouds above in some form of invisible magical kingdom to be capable of doing good or bad deeds in our life is to me at least, highly insulting, In my opinion the only thing that a man, woman or child needs to have in order to be good or bad is to know the social and moral norms of their society and to either go along with them, or against them, depending on if they want to be good or bad. As stated above there is no need for some form of more than likely non-existent deity for us to perform good deeds, all one needs is a strong moral compass and the strength in which to follow through with their moral ideals. All of which is within all of us and is an innate trait of humans, meaning we already know beforehand if we are doing something that would be seen as socially or morally acceptable/unacceptable. RE: Do we need a "God" to act morally? - thomas pendrake - 02-18-2014 Exotic seems to insist that god is a man, and to also only be able to view creation myths in a literal format. Creation as accident is a vanishingly small probability, not the other way around. To have a compass of any type requires a pole to point to. There is current research showing that infants have an innate sense of right and wrong, and some animals also demonstrate altruism. Why do you insist that the only concept of God is as a man that lives in the clouds? I agree with you completely, also the feeling of guilt is also born into humans along with several other animals such as dogs and such, the idea of us requiring a god or gods to decide our moral compass is ridiculous. RE: Do we need a "God" to act morally? - Leader - 02-23-2014 Human morality is natural, and doesn't need to be bestowed upon us by a magic book. |
