Do we need a "God" to act morally? 01-22-2014, 06:30 AM

I believe we do not need a mythological figure of justification and good will to be able to function as what society deems, "Good." We can easily make our own choices and decide whether or not we want to do what we do, and if anyone follows an unproven, more than likely nonexistent deity to the exact fine point for their morals than I have nothing but pity for them.

There is no such things as morality. A very well propagated piece of social concept is all it is.

Human morality does not, in any way, come from scripture. If you need the concept of someone watching over you to do good, then you are not a good person. If you do good because you think a god wants you to, you are not a good person. If you do good because you think you will be rewarded in the afterlife, you are not a good person. Our morality came to us through evolution, not scripture. We do not need a god to be moral beings. If you do, then you are not moral at all.

I agree with you 100 percent. There does not need to be some sort of higher power just to make us act morally. It's up to us. We are not controlled. I am unsure of my faith at the moment, and I have extremely high moral standards. I'm not ethical for a God, I'm ethical because I want to be a good person and help others.

I don't think so. I'm not religious, but I do believe in being a good person.
I don't necessarily think religion is a bad thing, even though I myself don't believe in it, though. If people need something to cling to in order to make it through the hard times, so be it. If being religious causes people to be better to one another and to act morally, how is that wrong?
I don't personally believe in the fairy tales, though.

Personally, I feel that how we act morally is something that comes with us in who we are.
Though I'm sure there are a few people that refuse to have morals without their God or whoever they cherish.
I believe morals come with how you're raised and taught as a child, or just common sense.

We do not need of any deity to be moral, morality it's proven scientifically to be innate.
