They affected the start-up a lot. Lower-end PCs had no chance to handle them, especially if it was a HP, Acer etc. with all their bloatware.

Well if you want to make your life easier on a Windows 8 PC, then you shouldn't be using Gadgets. As they only are good to use on your Desktop. While you still have the Start Screen, which you can download and pin all your useful applications and files directly and you can get access to them with a single button!
