Players compete against each other or against computer-controlled opponents to achieve objectives such as building bases, destroying enemy units, or capturing territory.

In an RTS game, players start with a limited amount of resources, such as gold or wood, which they must use to build structures and produce units. As the game progresses, players must gather more resources, build more advanced structures, and produce more powerful units to compete with their opponents.
