Okay, so i've gone ahead and done most of these steps. I've got one more problem, which sadly isn't under my hand: They're asking me to turn FindMy off. I cannot do that, as i don't actually own the iCloud or the device. Any way to go past this, or do i just stop the SE?

i’m about to try it right now, i’m guessing they’re going to ask me to take it to the local apple repair shop as theirs one about 5 minute walk from me lol. i’ll see how it goes.

Extremely vulnerable to covid? No family or friends to assist. Maybe also throw in you are 4-5 hours away from your nearest apple store and it's not fair to make you travel that far
