What's a good first attempt item for SE and site? Nothing too cheap but also not too spendy something with a high success rate?

If this is your first SE every, I would suggest you start with an item <100$ to get known to various methods. Start with the basic one, DNA, and learn how to contact the company to resolve the claim in your favor.
