Go for photoshop, gimp is sad in my opinion.

PS an FireWork are my top picks but hard to get
gimp is okay, I guess. I haven't used it that much.
I usually use Pixlr though. It's free, online, and has pretty much everything you'd need.

I think Adobe software is the best for pretty much any graphic design work, Photoshop is far better than GIMP in many aspects other than the fact GIMP is free.

I own Adobe Web Premium 5 so I've been using that since I bought it. I got it through school for just under $400 when I got it which was a pretty awesome deal.

Ehh... I'm not a huge fan of Adobe Fireworks. I used it a few times and it just didn't quite compare to Adobe Photoshop.
With that being said, I'll have to agree with some other people on this thread.
Adobe Photoshop series > Everything else

With that being said, I'll have to agree with some other people on this thread.
Adobe Photoshop series > Everything else
Photoshop + Illustrator for graphical design and some other Adobe products like: After Effects and Audobe Audition (For voice over work) are really good for their purposes
I still have all the MX versions of Macromedia software like dreamweaver and fireworks on my laptop and damn I'm just glad I don't have to work with that anymore.
I had to make an animation with fireworks and it was by far the most unlogical piece of garbage I had ever used.
