Walk into any room you need to 07-17-2013, 11:22 PM

Most information comes from Kevin Mitnick's book Ghost in the Wires.
You're not allowed into a certain room... how do I get in?
Pretty simple task. There are a few ways.
Carry a supposedly heavy box
Get cardboard box and act as if you're having trouble carrying it. Almost immediately people will be more enticed to hold the door open for you.
Tailgating
Most places that are supposed to be secure have an extremely strict policy against tailgaters. Tailgating is simply following behind someone that does have access. Often times, long time employees don't mind doing this.
If there's a strict policy, make a fake badge, ID, or item that shows authority. Observe the people that are allowed into the room/building. Do they have a badge of some sort? Look at it and recreate it yourself, and another employee will be much more likely to let you in, even hold the door for you!
Non-SE methods
Pick a lock
You can probably find a bump key on Amazon for just a few dollars. There are countless tutorials on the internet regarding bump keys, so I'll be brief on the topic. A bump key is a key that will push up on every pin inside the lock mechanism. Hit the end of the bump key sending all of the pins up. Do this while lightly turning the key. After a few tries, the lock will open for you.
Create a gap between the door
This is one that people might notice, but it's still worth a mention and one that I thought up earlier.
If you put something between the door and the place where it hits the wall when closed, then the door won't make the clicking noise when closing, and will let you pull the door open later, even though you can't turn the doorknob. (If anyone doesn't understand, let me know and I'll try to get some pictures of an example.
Hopefully none of you are going to break in to anyone's home, and I am not in support of any illegal activity, but know these things to be less vulnerable to a break in at your workplace. Even if the person you held the door for earlier had a badge- Wait a second, I'm $100 dollars short here...
