Hello, I have a 2014 pc build, and has no problems running normal programs or running videogames, although the new ones have to run on low graphic settings. Anyways I have low performance when running virtual machines on VirtualBox , even if all the apps on my host system are closed.I have tried both Linux debian and windows 10, and there is clearly a lag and low performance on both, just by simply going on a browser.

Pc specs:
Intel core i3 4370
Amd Radeon 7870
Ram 12 gb
SSD

Is this an hardware problem? Configuration of Virtualbox?Do you recommend other similar virtual machines programs?

An Important factor to effectively run VMs, Is the amount of Ram Installed- particularly "available Ram".

You have more than enough memory to accommodate a virtual machine. Are you experiencing the said Issues when running one or simultaneous VMs? Also, how much "available Ram" Is on hand?

I have low performance just by running a single Vm, and on my host system no app is running.
I have assigned half of my total ram to my VM, so it has 6 gb to use, and when running both my host and vm have more than 3 gb of ram free avaiable.

Your Host (physical machine) has 71% of memory In use, so It's not surprising that you're experiencing Issues.

There's no need to allocate 6 GB on the Guest (VM), It's an overkill that's not needed for general tasks. Assign 1 GB on the VM and see how you go. I've ran a lot of VMs with that amount of memory with no Issues whatsoever. If need be, Increase the Ram on the VM In small Increments whilst keeping an eye on performance.

There's something else that's causing or adding to the drop In performance.

Your specs will run a single active VM without any problems whatsoever. Has It always been the case, or have you been experiencing Issues as of late? Also, see what happens with another VM software such as VMware Workstation.

I've always had low performance on virtualbox VMs.
I tried VMware as you suggested, it seems to me that has a better performance than VirtualBox, but still have not a completely fluid experience

I was having this issue as well. After doing some research I found out that a lot of Windows default settings, and processes set in place, slow down virtual machines.

You've referenced some beneficial links that'll certainly help with troubleshooting Issues, however the OP's specs should easily run a single VM with minimal drop In performance and Windows 10 In Its default state.

If It was Hyper-V with simultaneous VMs, then that's understandable- It chews resources, particularly Ram. Moreover, the CPU must have virtualization support In the form of SLAT (Second Level Address Translation). In terms of VirtualBox, many years ago, I've ran It on 4 GB of Ram with a very mediocre CPU.

I'm pretty confused about the situation since I have tried a debian linux VM on my laptp wich is pretty decent, but also have low performance on it. Anyways I have downloaded Kali virtualbox image from their official website and runs very well
