How to put any program through Tor 12-05-2015, 04:33 PM

Hi, this is my first thread. Making it (and plan on making more) in an attempt to pull this place out of the ground.
In many cases, your VPN that you use may not be enough and you want to go an extra mile to keep yourself anonymous. Tor is one of the greatest things for this purpose, simply because it's virtually impossible to trace anything back to you after you've used it. VPNs on the other hand store logs and information that can be used to identify you (whether they tell you or not) and will readily hand that information to any federal agency who asks for it.
What you'll need for this tutorial -
I'm going to be using Pidgin as an example program for this tutorial, since it's a widely used XMPP client and most people using it prefer to keep their identity hidden. However, this will work for any program that allows you to configure proxy settings.
1. Assuming you've downloaded and installed TorBrowser, open it. This starts the Tor service, initializing the proxy we'll need for later. Open it by clicking this -

2. Minimize TorBrowser (do not exit out of it) as we don't need the window, unless you want it open for some reason.
3. Open Pidgin
4. Click "Accounts" at the top of the "Buddy List" window

5. Click "Manage Accounts" in the dropdown box
6. If you already have an account, just select the account and click "Modify..." at the bottom. If you don't already have an account made, click "Add..." at the bottom. For the sake of the tutorial, I'll just be using "Add..." although it doesn't make a difference. If you are using "Modify..." then skip to step 8.

7 (if you are adding a new account). Enter your credentials and whatnot. If you are creating a new XMPP account on an XMPP server (basically if you don't already have an account registered), enter the domain for that server and tick the box next to "Create this new account on the server" at the bottom of the window.

8. Click on the "Proxy" tab in the "Add Account" window.

9. Click the "Proxy type:" dropdown menu and select "SOCKS 5" (NOT "Tor/Privacy (SOCKS5)")

10. In the "Host" field, enter "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" (either one works) and 9150 in the "Port" field, as that is the connection port for the local Tor proxy.

11. You are done. Click "Add" (if you are adding a new account) or "Save" (if you are modifying an already existing account).

12. Enjoy your privacy.
Again, this will work for anything that allows you to configure a proxy. You'll need to have TorBrowser running any time you connect if you actually want it to work and go through Tor.

- TorBrowser
- A program that allows you to configure a SOCKS5 proxy to use for internet connections
