How to make a secure password 02-17-2013, 12:34 AM

I am using the term "encrypted" a bit loosely, but for the Average Joe your passwords will seem like nightmares.
Let's get started.
First, lets make up a sentence.
Maybe you might have a really short quote you can use? It doesn't matter just make sure it isn't alliterated, as that will not work too well for you in this tutorial.
The sentence I will be using is, "A hungry lion sits and waits".
- Note: Make sure you pick something that you could just remember off of the top of your head.
Now if you take the first letter of each word in that sentence you would get this:
Code:
Next pick a number. Maybe even your favorite number? Your birth year? How many extra toes you have? It doesn't matter. The number doesn't even have to be huge, but ranging from 1-4 characters long would work just fine.
For my example I will be a cool kid and use 1337.
Now you can use this number in a variety of different ways.
You can break it up throughout the sentence.
Code:
Put part in the middle and end.
Code:
But for the simplicity of the tutorial I will just do the following:
Code:
Now you have a sentence you can easily remember and a number put into one.
Our final step is to add some punctuation.
I want the sentence to sound like this.
A hungry lion. Sits and waits?
(Blah blah, not proper grammar, sue me.)
Anyways, adding the punctuation in would look something like is.
Code:
Notice I put the period in the middle of the number, why? Why not.
Let's check the strength of this password shall we?

Works for me!
And that wraps this up. For those of you out there like me and feel they need to be on edge with being secure, I feel this should be about as secure as needed for my average everyday use.
Hope I helped out at least some of you!
