Tor + Freenode
In this tutorial I will show how you can connect to the Freenode IRC network using Tor on Linux. The IRC client I will be using is XChat
You will need
The first thing you will need to do is obviously to download and install tor daemon or tor browser bundle and xchat. The list items above are links to the respective requirement
Set up an account on Freenode
When you've done this you need to launch xchat and connect to the Freenode network. Here you will need to register with the NickServ service.
Code:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>Follow the instruction in the email to complete the registration then disconnect from Freenode.
Set up SASL
Now we need to load the sasl plugin for xchat. Download this to ~/.xchat or ~/.xchat2 depends on what the folder is named in your system.
Code:
/load ~/.xchat2/cap_sasl_xchat.plWhen this is set loaded you need to configure it with the information you registered with NickServ
Code:
/sasl set freenode <username> <password> PLAIN
/sasl saveConfigure network settings
Now go to XChat > Network List > Freenode and replace the server with
Code:
p4fsi4ockecnea7l.onion/6667Spoiler:

Then go to Settings > Preferences > Network and set
Hostname: localhost
Port: 9050
Type: SOCKS5

Final steps
Now start Tor
Code:
sudo service tor startif that doesn't work you can try
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/tor startand then reconnect to Freenode. You should now see something similar to this
Code:
Looking up p4fsi4ockecnea7l.onion
* Looking up localhost
* Connecting to localhost (127.0.0.1) port 9050...
* Connected. Now logging in...
* *** Looking up your hostname...
* *** Checking Ident
* *** No Ident response
* *** Couldn't look up your hostname
CLICAP: supported by server: account-notify extended-join identify-msg multi-prefix sasl
CLICAP: requesting: multi-prefix sasl identify-msg
CLICAP: now enabled: multi-prefix sasl identify-msg
You are now logged in as **********.
* *** Spoofing your IPFinal words
I hope you found this helpful, and as always, if you have any questions let me know and I will answer you the best I can
