I literally had this come up in my class last week. Textbook costs valued at $1,200 annually is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. A lot of people tend to wait until their class has started to see whether the teacher REALLY thinks you need the latest edition.
In some fields the updated editions contain more relevant applications for the content and additions to materials... sometimes it's a new fucking cover.
One of the other issues is the sheer cost from buying at the college bookstore. I've saved literally hundreds of dollars by purchasing on amazon, rather than the bookstore, often buying brand new copies of books for the same price as the "used-rental" at the college bookstore. Unfortunately, not all college freshman would know/think to do that.
