Then learning Python to have a better understanding of how simple things are in python vs lower langauages and so you understand what is going on behind the scenes.

It sounds like you are just learning to program. I would certainly not start with C++, hehe although if you wanted to, I would go with Qt C++.

I would recommend starting with a high level programming language such as C# or Java or VB.net.

I have to agree as to which one you should start with depends on what your end goal is. If you want to be able to run scripts to manipulate systems without having to muck with memory, hardware specific coding and the like, go with python.

On the other hand, if you are wanting to be able to manipulate system memory, hardware protocols and kernels, then hit up c++. Though, starting out you might want to go with the easier of the 2.

What I would suggest is that you go through some tutorials on both to see which one appeals to you more and set your workstation up for that.

Both are quite powerful to use and have pro's and con's that make them both appealing and a pain. You will eventually find this out as you play with the languages more.

Many big programs are using C++ or C as a base with python or other similar language ontop of it, but the merit from using C++ in the base is the increase of speed and using other languages ontop gives the ability to easily create plugins etc.

If you ask me, I would recommend you to start learning C++, it's a quite difficult language but also very powerful and can be very fun to know. It's the first language I studied and I am glad it was because now knowing C++, other languages are way easier to grasp becasue I already know how objects, pointers, classes, inheritance and everything works.

Learning C++ also give you good programming habits and makes you understand what's going on in the backgroudn when you're using higher leveled languages.

I hate questions, like "C or C++ ?" , "Php or Ruby ?" , "Java or Objective-C ? ", and etc...

Every language has its pros and cons. It depends on what you are wanting to do with them.

And finally, i recommend you to start learning both languages. Not at the same time. But you should definitely do that. They are both great languages.

I started learning c++(no prior programming experience, I knew nothing lol) with these books
- starting out with c++ by tony gaddis
- then moved on to Bjarne Stroustrup's book

- then moved to web technologies since its easier to make money there(I'm an accounting student and a freelancer now)

what I can say is, learn C++ is a must if you want to learn more because c++ is harder than other high level languages (no garbage collection, etc etc), but it is fun. I'm planning to continue my study in C++ next year (using QT 5 probably), continue on what I left 2 years ago. We can learn together if you want

If you are set on those two languages I would say start with C++ and if not learn C#.

i learned python so i suggest it to you...its really interesting language but different style from c++...c++ is Oriented Programming language...python not..c++ will help you understand easier java...i suggest you start with python then learn c++ too...both are pretty good and usefull
