Below is what we are aiming for at the end of this tut.
![[Image: photoshop-fire-text.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-fire-text.jpg)
Step 1: Open Photoshop and create a new document,
name it whatever you'd like and make sure your dimen-
sions are 3 by 3 inches.
![[Image: photoshop-new-document.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-new-document.gif)
Step 2: You're gonna want to fill your background with a black color.
![[Image: photoshop-fill-dialog-box.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-fill-dialog-box.gif)
Step 3: Create a text (the font/text really doesn't matter, I just used "Fire"
and Times New Roman for the sake of the tutorial) you can use whatever font
and text you'd like.
![[Image: photoshop-add-text.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-add-text.gif)
Step 4: Re-size the text to fit you're workspace, make sure to leave some
at the top for our flames.
![[Image: free-transform-text.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/free-transform-text.gif)
Step 5: Right click on the type layer and click Rasterize>Type.
![[Image: photoshop-rasterize-type.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-rasterize-type.gif)
Step 6: Next you're going to want to make a copy of the rasterized text layer.
![[Image: copied-text-layer.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/copied-text-layer.gif)
Turn the duplicate layer OFF for now.
![[Image: layer-visibility-icon.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/layer-visibility-icon.gif)
Step 7: Now click on the main type layer once again. Rotate the canvas 90
degrees clockwise.
![[Image: rotate-canvas-cw.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/rotate-canvas-cw.gif)
Step 8: Apply the wind filter while the text is still rotated.
![[Image: select-wind-filter.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/select-wind-filter.gif)
Make sure the settings match the ones below.
![[Image: photoshop-wind-filter.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-wind-filter.gif)
Click "ok" and your text should look like this.
![[Image: wind-filter-applied.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/wind-filter-applied.gif)
Hit Ctrl+F to add the filter once more.
![[Image: wind-filter-three-times.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/wind-filter-three-times.gif)
Step 9: Rotate the canvas again 90 degrees counter clockwise.
![[Image: rotate-canvas-ccw.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/rotate-canvas-ccw.gif)
Step 10: Duplicate the background layer.
![[Image: duplicate-background-layer.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/duplicate-background-layer.gif)
Step 11: Right click on the "Fire" text layer and click "Merge Down."
![[Image: photoshop-merge-down.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-merge-down.gif)
Your layers should now look like this.
![[Image: merged-layers.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/merged-layers.gif)
Step 12: Select the rectangular marquee tool.
![[Image: photoshop-rectangular-marquee-tool.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-rectangular-marquee-tool.gif)
Now draw a rectangular marquee around the text, making sure you
leave enough room for our flames.
![[Image: select-text.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/select-text.gif)
Step 13: Apply the "Liquify" filter.
![[Image: select-liquify.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/select-liquify.gif)
Make sure the "Forward Warp Tool" is selected.
![[Image: liquify-warp-tool.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/liquify-warp-tool.gif)
Set your brush size to 100.
![[Image: brush-size-100.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/brush-size-100.gif)
Move the brush lightly from left to right on each flame.
![[Image: streaks-wispy.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/streaks-wispy.gif)
Now change the brush size to 15.
![[Image: brush-size-15.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/brush-size-15.gif)
Lightly stroke up in the text, giving it that flame like look.
![[Image: photoshop-small-flames.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-small-flames.gif)
After that, change your brush size one more time. This time to 50.
![[Image: brush-size-50.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/brush-size-50.gif)
Stroke upwards on the flames you just made, making large flames.
![[Image: photoshop-large-flames.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-large-flames.gif)
After all that, it should look somewhat like this.
![[Image: text-flames.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/text-flames.gif)
Step 14: Add a hue/saturation overlay to the "Fire" layer.
![[Image: select-hue-saturation.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/select-hue-saturation.gif)
Make sure the settings look like these, for the most realistic fire look.
![[Image: photoshop-hue-saturation.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-hue-saturation.jpg)
It should look like this.
![[Image: photoshop-flames-yellow.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-flames-yellow.gif)
Step 15: Now turn the "Fire Copy" layer ON.
![[Image: photoshop-layer-visibility.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-layer-visibility.gif)
Step 16: Add a gradient overlay to the "Fire Copy" layer.
![[Image: select-gradient-overlay.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/select-gradient-overlay.gif)
Click on the gradient to change it. Click the far left pointer first.
![[Image: photoshop-gradient-editor.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-gradient-editor.jpg)
Select a dark orange/brownish color.
![[Image: color-picker-1.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/color-picker-1.jpg)
Now click the right pointer.
![[Image: gradient-editor-2.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/gradient-editor-2.jpg)
Select a light/burnt orange color.
![[Image: color-picker-2.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/color-picker-2.jpg)
Make sure the settings match the ones below.
![[Image: gradient-overlay-options-2.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/gradient-overlay-options-2.jpg)
At this point, your text should look like this.
![[Image: text-custom-gradient.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/text-custom-gradient.jpg)
Step 17: The edges look a little rough. So you need to add a layer mask.
![[Image: layer-mask-icon.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/layer-mask-icon.gif)
Step 18: Select the brush tool while still on the "Fire Copy" layer.
![[Image: photoshop-brush-tool.gif]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-brush-tool.gif)
Step 19: Touch up the edges as needed. It will be different, pending
on what font and text you used.
![[Image: hiding-text-edges.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/hiding-text-edges.jpg)
_________________________________________
FINALLY. We're done!
The finished project should match the one below
besides the font/text you used, etc.
![[Image: photoshop-fire-text.jpg]](http://pe-images.s3.amazonaws.com/type/effects/fire-text/photoshop-fire-text.jpg)
