I don't really like it much. The cogs are too close to the red border, the text doesn't stand out enough and I feel it's a little bit too big.. only a couple of pixels with these sizes ofcourse.. For some reason I like the rounded borders we have now more. On overall: 7/10

The second one is already looking much better ;D. I have a tip to make it more interesting:
Add a texture to the inner border (red one) and then overlay that texture with a white color and set that layer mode to color (I believe) or fiddle a bit with it.

It's a little too plain for my liking, and not in that new age pseudo-intellectual minimalist way. You should experiment with some different blending options (such as outer glow or drop shadow on a lighter background) and see if you can get a result you like. Also, the border seems a little too thick, so I recommend maybe thinning it out to 1px or 2 px at the most. Anything thicker and it starts to become too much of a distraction.

I agree. It's far too plain. Generally userbars are just flashy enough to draw attention, but simple enough that it can be absorbed fairly quickly.
Basically that entails brighter colors, a gradient, and maybe a more attractive border, much like the default.
Just my opinion.
