Am I the only one blunt enough to mention that it is pixelated as hell?

The effect of what looks good and what doesn't will change depending one what is framing it in it's "surroundings" on the web.
When there's a lot of space around it (as there is in the examples in this thread), the boxed in version looks better. In my opinion it puts a close on the shape and draws the eye to the shape. However, if the logo is surrounded by other things, it may have a different effect. Try it in different backgrounds (as in where it will be used) and see how that looks.
I won't repeat the stuff about tidying it up since everyone's already mentioned it. I really love the designIt's quirky and kinda clever - reminds me of a copyright sign breaking apart xD

Most logos have to be adaptable to change and work under several applications.
It is best to work in black and white and only add colors and styles as the client asks for them or you deem worthy later on.
Staying in a gray scale format makes it easier to judge your design and not your color choices instead.

it's just the goddamned layer of 50% grey I applied...
the original color is black, which you couldn't see at all on the forum.

actually, how I made this was using the shape tool (U, as you mentioned) and then edit it with the marqueel tool or whatever (m)...
Also, here is the original without the 50grey layer on it.
