Microsoft Surface Laptop Parts Swap 05-20-2024, 04:19 AM

Hey there people,
Several months earlier I was contemplating buying a new laptop since my Surface Laptop 3 (base spec) was starting to get slow. I did some research on getting the new SL 5 model , but obviously it was wayy to expensive for me as a purchase. I noticed however, that they both have the same chassis and interior layout, which made me question the possible viability of simply buying the most expensive option to swap out the replacement and return it back with the old stuff. So thats what I did:
This post should be taken as a guide for future reference - This particular process of swapping internal parts is not an easy feat for the average individual, as I would recommend you to be mechanically inclined and willing to be very precise. But do not fear, the process was not insanely difficult.
1) Purchase the surface laptop 5, to whatever spec (I chose the 32gb i7 15 inch alcantara, colour doesnt matter)
2) make sure both laptops are the same size.
3) Make sure you have a proper kit to disassemble the laptop (I bought a cheap Torx kit from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PY8WQHJ/ref...HUWLSF6TT5)
4) Follow a disassembly guide, and replace everything but the laptop's respective SSD
5) Boot up the laptop to make sure they both work
6) reassemble and prepare for returns
7) Enjoy your new laptop!
Notes: It may be tempting to swap the battery out (for you Surface laptop owners with an old battery) but the battery is glued to the bottom tray of the laptop, which has its serial number engraved in it. I wouldnt risk swapping that out in the case that amazon or walmart return facilities would check the serial.
