I've been using Affinity Designer and Pixelmator recently.
Pixelmator in combination with GIMP might compare to photoshop, but each alone are not enough.
Affinity is nice for graphic design, but does need a bit more work.

I can see why Adobe has the monopoly, but Affinity might catch up in the near future.

I'll be working on some more soon. I don't pump them out like kids but I just design when I think of something new. This is the first I've done in this style and as I don't know modern userbar styles I plan to stick with this one.

I quite like photoshop.. but I'm REALLY not fond of paying $200 per year, even on student rates. Not something I could justify unless I used it professionally. I would use if for digital drawing, which means I have a lot of alternatives that are significantly less expensive. I currently use a little Japanese program called Paint Tool Sai. Not the same by any means, but it does what I need.

As of the time It became a subscription-based service, It changed the views of many consumers/end users. Rather than paying a ridiculous annual fee, they've opted for similar alternatives.

I have Krita and Gimp, was a major fan of Paint.Net on Windows, I also enjoyed Substance painter, Mari and a few others. I used to use gimp until I got Photoshop Cs6 Extended and now primarily use Adobe products. Legal or not. I've got the student discount setup to my business accounts so I really never pay for it. It's a godsend when switching between AE and Premiere
