With all due respect I think that the advice given to you regarding W3 schools is pretty bad. In my opinion W3 schools teachers you improper javascript and really shouldn't be used for learning a new language. If you are just starting out codeacademy.com is a good recourse for learning a languages as well as just youtube tutorials that seem reputable. As for the slider, if you want help just building the one slide message me directly and I will shoot you a script that should do what you want.

Open a non-minified plugin and have a look. You will learn TONS!

Study JQuery first, since it is funnest. The official site will get you started if you already are coming at it with a programming background. JQuery UI actually has great sliders already. Download and learn. Set up a LAMP or WAMP environment to build and test your page in.
