Eventhough I don't like to use Linux as a desktop OS I actually hope it's going to get really popular in the next few years so it becomes the next windows. I just want something that works "as easy" as windows, Something similar, Something my parents could switch to too. I'm all for UI changes as long as it has a Start button, the same map structure, and that all programs are able to run on Linux.
But that is just my 2 cents as a noob who only uses linux for school and servers.

elementaryOS is simple. The interface is clear and you can navigate easy. The "start button" menu is great. For surfing and watching movies is perfect. Your parents can easy switch to this OS. The problem is that the skype is a bit different and buggy (in my mind). But most parents aren't interested in switching the OS. They need "only to work" and they don't have time (most parents) to learn the new OS.
Only the gaming performance, mouse/keyboard drivers and some games make me use Windows.
