Didn't Steam try to do their own OS? What ever happened with that?

Steam did drop SteamOS in favour of supporting Linux via a specific distro (and now Steam's Proton is taking this further by attempting to support Linux *in general*). That's where my comment from above enters... Steam chose Ubuntu as their supported platform, but are now dropping support. I read an article about why yesterday but I can't honestly remember what the reason is.

Do you have any insight into creating a service file to start a vpn at start up. crontab won't work as network manager starts AFTER the crontab executes which resets the network connection

NOTE: This assumes that your Linux distro is using systemd. With that said, most distros use systemd. Just double check.

It does. I'm on Parrot OS. I've been trying to figure it out of the longest time. I think my misunderstanding is more with setting up a VPN service file as opposed to simple a service file. I have ProtonVPN and I think it also uses OpenVPN and idk how to make the service files work together.
