I've seen a lot of people on the forum want to get into Linux but aren't quite sure about it or they've tried it but are finding it difficult. I thought I'd start a thread so people can post any problems or ask questions in one place.

I'd be happy to answer any questions people have and I'm sure other forum members will help out too.

Well, if someone is thinking of switching from Windows XP or higher to Linux, I'd suggest using a distro called Peppermint OS, which is based on Ubuntu and is VERY close in UI to M$. It has a task bar with a start menu where programs are categorized.
There are a lot of problems setting up VPN connections, but if you want to convert from Windows to *Nix, Peppermint Remix is the best way to get people to switch.

However I honestly think we've moved on from the old scary days of linux where it was difficult for someone to move over - as long as you're relatively happy with computers then it shouldn't be a problem to use most distros - it's no different imo from learning to use android.

Yes, there's lots of scary command line stuff - but the average user won't need it at all and if they do it's usually just a case of looking up the commands with a quick google. Everything can be done with the GUI on most modern distros and its so easy to keep everything up to date.

You'd be surprised how many problems I have switching users even to Peppermint, which is essentially Windows Mint Edition. People really do fear change, and a great deal of them think Windows IS their computer.

With that said, I usually recommend people to switch to Manjaro or ElementaryOS. I'm an Arch user myself (Antergos really, but now I'm migrating to a full Arch Linux install), and for that reason I love recommending Manjaro... Although I have a slight prejudice against it (I've had a number of bad experiences, including an install that couldn't find the decryption key for full-disk encryption... Terrible bug, although surely it's been squashed), I know it's highly popular and a solid start for newbies.

Anyways, I encourage all forum users to migrate away from proprietary operating systems. To all new Linux (or BSD) users, welcome to the world of Unix-like OS's. Please use us on this forum for help.

Yeah they're all good distros.

I used to tell people to start off with Debian just because it has the widest user base (so more help for any potential problems) and you often see a lot of guides/etc. for software written with Debian in mind. I think things have changed now though and it's not as important as it once was.

I think generally it's just much easier to get into and shouldn't be intimidating. I see lots of new people to the hacking scene still trying to use windows because they dont dare go into linux, when really it just makes everything so much easier.

As @Sartux puts it, getting into *nix is definitely a must. It does make things easier and once you understand it, will open up doors to other realms too. Personally, I usually tell people to start with Ubuntu, but Debian is my 2nd choice for recommendations. Both have plenty of material and support to help you along the way.

Did you hear that Steam is dropping support for Ubuntu? I suspect that they may switch to Manjaro for their officially-supported platform. I wonder who they'll chose, though...

Either way, that will increase the number of Linux users (and increase the popularity of that distro).

Actually, I could even see Steam choosing Solus... It has very nice Steam integration from its (independent distro family) inception.

Didn't Steam try to do their own OS? What ever happened with that?

Do you have any insight into creating a service file to start a vpn at start up. crontab won't work as network manager starts AFTER the crontab executes which resets the network connection
