There is pretty much no difference between any distro for programming. You can get all the essential features in any distro. All you need are the compilers (which are independent of the distro) and a text editor/IDE. Almost all popular distros can run Code::Blocks and Geany.
If you want a lightweight distro (one which has lesser features but is faster and takes less space), you might want to try Lubuntu or #! (Crunchbang Linux).
If you want a standard OS where you can get support easily, try Fedora or Debian.
but in my suggestion if you are new towards linux go for ubuntu.... you'll get all these + a newbie friendly gui.... :Thumbs-Up:

I agree with most of that apart from the last statement. Aside from the fact I personally hate Gnome 3, you can in fact use any desktop environment you like on any distro you choose

sir! i am glad that u agree with me! but as far as last statement is concerned... you can use any desktop environment but i am personally (being newbie in linux) very comfortable with unity gnome environment.... being user friendly.... (i am not saying that others are not user friendly) but the launcher, etc is really good!!...

I personally prefer fedora it has almost everything what I like about windows (no windows games ), barley anything I hate about windows. And the distribution is "shipped" with boxes (aka a virtual machine), so you can do stuff in a secure environment. Also it looks pretty great IMO (which is great too).

I'm also a Fedora user (xfce (modified) DE) don't forget selinux as well "out of the box" for added security. steam works quite well with fedora and for anything else there's always wine
