Kali in a VM / USB - Problems #1
Hey guys,

im working for days to get my USB Drive at the point where I can boot from it. But it only will work for windows and I got a Mac. I googled a long time but most of the people there have the same problem like me, maybe u can help me to get it going.
My USB Drive cant be detecded when im starting my Mac and search for the booting option.
After a other solution that I tried, I can see it now on my boot options. Its called "EFFI Boot" but when I boot from it, it just start my normal IOS ^^ Help? Biggrin

So the other Question.
I think the USB drive will take to much time to get itself going. Cause of that I started Kali in a VM. It works fine. I got a internet connection and even fixed the "Eth0 Not Configured" - Issue like it was explained here. (Thanks to Aut•ono•mous at this point)
Okey, it all works fine but I cant work with network pentesting programs like "Wifite".
When I start it Im getting the message: [Image: Ohne_Titel_2.png]

Even when I changed the network setting in my VM on "bridged" it wont work.
Someone got the knowledge to help me out?
I googled a long time here too. The most guys are saying that Kali cant connect to the real network care in my laptop cause of the VM. Thats why I got the problem.
I cant understand it. I got a internet connection via Iceweasel but cant work with stuff like Wifite cause of my network card?
Is there a way to get around it without buying a usb network adapter?

Thanks for reading! I hope u can read my very bad english and maybe help me out Tongue

For booting from USB with a Mac I can't help as I don't use one. As for your WiFi trouble the only way around it is with a USB adapter due to the way VM's work any active connection is seen as a wired (ethernet) interface and as such can't be used for WiFi based attacks. To be honest though although I use Linux as my daily OS whenever I test wireless networks I always use a USB adaptor as they have much better antennas which gets a better signal (plus not all cards are capable of packet injection anyway, so some simply can't be used regardless)

I found a way to boot it with a programm called "Mac Linux USB Loader". But now cant login cause the installation caused some login trouble. Its a knowen issue from the software. Maybe somebody can help me to figure out the password.
Some people got the same problem. They can boot kali with the usb, but cant log in with normal "root - toor"...

Maybe someone knows how to get into the OS ^^

Thy for ur explaining why it wont work with the VM! I finally get it ^^
I will buy a adapter if u say it would work better, even with a normal pc. Thanks for the input and the knowledge!

Before buying an adaptor be sure to check the compatibility on the aircrack website as some cards won't be supported or may need additional drivers, I use an Alfa network AWUS036H which works well straight out the box and has semi decent range.

For your log in options what exactly happens at boot? looking at some screen shots it looks like there is an option to edit the kernel options which would be the way to go. you will be looking for a line like this

Code:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic root=UUID=bc6f8146-1523-46a6-8b\ 6a-64b819ccf2b7 ro quiet splash

add 'single' (without quotes) and boot, this will put you into single user mode which is a root shell with no GUI. From there you can use the passwd command to change the password.

Cause I am a big noobiew, could u tell me where I can look for the kernel changes? Onto my USB? In the stuff that the program write on it?
Would be greatfull cause Im new to linux ^^
And where to set "single" in the code?

When I boot, I can switch for the USB Drive and then it normaly boots kali's log in screen. (Without installation! It just pops up but I never installed it onto the usb)

And I will look for the network stuff later. Hopefully it works ^^

Thanks chmod!

I was going from the very little research I did but found this guide
https://github.com/SevenBits/Mac-Linux-U...structions
For which the paragraph you are interested in is directly above this image

From there you will see the kernel options which will look similar to those in my last reply (some of the version numbers and root UUID will will differ) but you should recognise it. Just add it to the end of the line and that shout be fine.

You could try if youre on a MAC to run Kali in Parallels Desktop http://www.parallels.com/eu/products/desktop/
I run Ubuntu in Parallels Desktop without any issues.
