Doesn't really matter what language you use. It's about personal opinion in the end. If you're good at either of these languages, you're good to go.

My personal opinion is Python because Java requires to be compiled and can be relatively slow / a memory hog where as python is reasonably fast and not to mention that my OS (linux) comes with Python natively supported where as Java is not.

I seem to be a bit late to the party, but both are good for different things.
If you're distributing your project to inexperienced, or non-programmers, I think Java's the way to go, because you can pack it up in a jar so nobody can screw it up, plus everyone already has Java installed.
That said, Java is a gigantic pain in the stack trace. It's super technical and there's only one way to do stuff right, so I'd recommend python if you're dealing with an experienced crowd (ie your code is on github), you want to have some fun and be creative, or you don't want to hate yourself. Plus, python does have window support (.pyw), so you aren't missing out on any java exclusives.
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.
