There is no competition, this was only a suggestion. (one that seems to have been shot down)
It wasn't shot down as much as it was deemed "unsupported", sort of like Windows XP.

That's understandable. Not everyone has readily-available funds.
I could purchase a group this minute, but It's the caliber and activity of members (within the group) In keeping It running at It's optimal state that's of concern. I'm not targeting this community per say, but more so stating a fact that we're all busy, therefore Inevitable/unforeseen circumstances do happen with our personal affairs- and as such may have a negative Impact In being actively Involved with the group.
That said, there's always time for everything. It just needs to be managed accordingly.
I would say everything you've said is true. Sometimes a well defined and long-term, sustainable goal for the group can be all it needs. I don't mean "keep x-section active". But if you're goal is to make sales or to produce x number of tutorials in a field etc, you will have a clearer vision for your group's role. I'm extremely lucky that Otaku is sustainable on it's own, since new shows, games, conventions are released all the time. We never really run out of material.

That was too punny

I try and view It from a few angles and base my thoughts (they are only thoughts/opinions and nothing more) on what I've experienced with this community over the last 5 years. If I'm out of context, I'll gladly stand corrected and do hope It's put to my attention.
I most definitely agree with you on Otaku. The nature of It, whereby something new Inevitably emerges every so often, Is a huge bonus In keeping Interest alive within the group.

Well, I believe you are good at thinking about things with the bigger picture in mind, so I value your opinion, and often find myself agreeing with you! xD

I never thought about the price being a motivator, that's actually a great point, if you give away groups users wont be as motivated as if they spent money on the group.
Groups do actually cost a lot. The problem though is with sustainability. SL just doesn't quite have those niches that are needed for groups just yet.

I am still interested in our idea with a group. A little off topic in general but almost a direct reply to your "lacking niche" statement.

Well, Otaku has exactly that - a niche, and a subject focus where the content (anime shows/manga and franchises) is constantly being produced, giving us the opportunity to keep posting about new content. If you can find a group focus that can replicate that kind of information and content resource, that would help resolve sustainability issues.

I believe a group works collectively- niches, commitment and the caliber of It's members to keep It's content In a HQ-like manner.
If any element Is lacking, so too will the group to some degree.
