Hello,

So, Ive browsed around a bit searching about linux systems, programminglanguages, scripting and the like..
And now I feel like im hammered hehehe.
I have very little knowledge about these concepts, especially where to start..probably because there isnt just one point to start at but still..
So I decided to ask HC..yes *you* .. what would you recommend me to start with?
Is it preferable to start with a scriptinglanguage before a programminglanguage?
If so, wich scriptinglanguage? If not, what programminglanguage would be recomendable?
What linux system would suffice?
For the record, I dont feel much for *ubuntu...I might be getting ahead of myself but..I just dont see the fun in picking something so overly-commercialized. Id rather have one that makes alot of use of the terminal and text based commands,
prefer it because its fun to learn about (dont set me up with something without a GUI at all though, dont tease me haha)

About the GUI: That's your choice. Arch won't preinstall anything for you, so you can choose what suits you best. The beginners guide will tell you how to install a desktop manager. A lightweight one that I like xfce

However I have a window manager only (xmonad), which forces me to use terminals a lot. It is a tiling wm, making it perfect to use for programming and other work.

What most people call scripting languages are programming languages too. Scripting languages are well suited for small programs (also called scripts) that make your everyday life as administrator or computer user much easier. They usually don't have to be compiled to run them.
So it really depends what you want. Do you want to make bigger programs that you compile to an executable or do you want some simple scripts that automate tasks for you?

I recommend learning bash script first & search for basic linux infos.
If you don't prefer ubuntu , you can also try Mint the linux with xfce DE (I found it very light and nice )
After that goto python programming section and learn coding .

Well, Its a funny coincidence, while reading your reply I am actually busy trying to install arch linux on virtualbox as I type this msg haha..
Looked exactly as something Id have fun tinkering with
As for giving you guys more information, I think Im just in love with the idea so to speak, id settle for writing small programs that could tweak everyday performance, as long as Id also have the knowledge to write more heavy applications, Id have fun just in the learning itself I guess. It could be literally anything. Do certain programminglanguages limit your choice of programs to write? I am not so familiar with this, what programminglanguage would be best for what? Ill search something about it also..
Ah I played with batch before, It would be as good a place as any to start I guess, should i solemly focus on this or could I focus on python or another language meanwhile also?

I would say start with Python or Perl. Both are scripting languages, considered easy to learn and your scripts can be used platform independend.
Perl is especially good with text processing tasks and it allows you several ways to solve things. You always have more than one way to write the same, because the language inventor was a linguist and thought it would be cool if you can not only speak differently, but also write your code differently.
Python on the contrary has one way to accomplish things, what makes it easier to read other people's code.

It is possible to make larger applications with these languages, but others are a bit better suited for them. I.e. for 3D games that need heavy computation you go better with C++.
That's actually the case with most popular languages. You can use them for almost everything, but it will be easier or more efficient with some languages than with others.

So don't hesitate to learn Perl or Python or something else that seems right for you. It is important that you learn how to program. Once you think like a programmer it is much easier to learn other languages.

Batch is Windows only. You said you want to learn how to do stuff in Linux, so I wouldn't learn Batch.
I am not sure if it was a typo. @MrGeek talked about Bash, not Batch. Bash as scripting language is limited to Bash the Unix shell. It can't be used for big applications. It can only be used to automate and configure tasks on *nix systems. But as MrGeek said it is nice to learn while learning Linux. They go hand in hand, so to speak.

Don't try to learn several languages at a time. That confuses you and you will be slowlier learning things. Concentrate on one language first.

You probably won't program a microcontroller in Python, or a driver, or a kernel. That requires something closer to the metal like C.

Java can do everything PHP can, but a lot of things are done with fewer lines in PHP. PHP is used for web only, whereas Java is best with embedded programs, but also used on desktop and for enterprise applications.

Python has some good web frameworks, but isn't solely used for web applications.
