Hello there!

I am designing a website were the visitors to the site can add information to a database using forms. The purpose of the website is to supply prices of certain items, the prices of the items are supplied by the users of the site. Like a watchdog of prices.

I would like to give the visitor information like average price in say Australia of item X, or England of item Y. The information I would like to be made available in graphs and tables at the users choice. Over time getting a more accurate index of prices like average price per state or county then eventually cities and towns. I plan it to incorporate most countries.

I have a few questions.
Can I use Python for such a website?
What would be the first steps in building such a database?
Does anybody have any recommendations for reading
material or tutorials to get me started?

I have knowledge in HTML and CSS and have started to learn Python.
Any help would be most appreciated

Yes you can by using the Django framework. But I would prefer PHP for the purpose of building Dynamic websites

Or would i need to use something like Mysql and an external graphing web app?

For database you can use any db at backend like : MySQL, PostGre etc.


If you use HTML5 then you have canvas with which you can draw objects, shapes etc. You can even draw graphs based on your requirement.

Thank you. The graphs would have to be semi live (the info implanted by the users will be afect the graph).
Kind of like how stockmarkets are displayed.

This is not a problem. When drawing the graph with HTML5/Javascript you would dynamically specify the size of the graph, bars, etc based on your needs. Just because HTML is mentioned does not mean its automatically static content.

maybe you want to have a look at MariaDB instead of MySQL
