Expect to fuck up. A lot. PS, Gimp and pretty much every other piece of IES has a big learning curve. It will take a bit to learn the in's and out's of your software. Just don't give up! If you have a problem, chances are someone else has had that same problem. Use the interwebz to your advantage.

Just play around with the software you have at your disposal. I am a poor graphics artist/designer so I will open up photoshop on days and do nothing but watch and/or read tutorials and just play around with stuff. You'd be amazed at what just taking a little bit of time to get familiar with your software will do.
And keep an eye out for resources, they will be your best bud sometimes when working on projects. Also, it may take a while to get good at it, cause I've been doing graphics for over two years now and still suck at it. ( I know, I know, that's probably a sign that my artistic abilities just aren't there and I should just stick to being a skid) And just have fun with it.
You need anything or may have some questions, you can PM me and I will help you out best I can.

Depends what graphics you want to start doing.
Web Design/Graphics
Digital art
GFX
Photo retouching
or else.
If you want to start doing Web Design I would suggest first to Google around a little read the basics about usage of fonts, colour, text, text size, layouts, types of layouts/websites and other pretty sure you can find even more on internet. After you read some information and want to do practical work but don't know where to start or how to start. Well there are couple ways of getting started with design
you either Google for web designs you like and try re-do them from 0. Of course do not publish it after you done it because it would be a copyright then because you were copying someone's work remember that you are doing this only for practice. After doing that you eventually gaining some experience and your own ideas starts coming up.
Or also you can just take a piece of paper sit and think of ideas sketch it and start work on the idea you sketched out.
To start digital art you obviously will need Graphics tablet because its almost impossible to perform good art with computer mouse. If you born with ability to draw nicely digital art might suit you. You might struggle in the beginning since you need to get use to the graphics tablet.
Forgot to mention that you would also need to Watch couple tutorials how to configure Graphics Tablet and stuff like that. Anyway its same principal you either get something from Google and try to draw it just to get some experience or sketch your ideas and start drawing.
Don't know much about GFX would suggest watching lots of tutorials on effects working with renders overlays and stuff like that.
Photo retouching don't know much about it as well but would also suggest watching and practicing from videos.
Hope you find this helpful I could've kept on writing about Web Design/Graphics but don't want to make this too boring to read.

Get used to the interface, download some graphics packs, and let your creativity flow.
