So i had a person call me and tell me that her computer is shutting down as soon as she logs into her computer, i won't see this computer until Thursday 1/19 which is tomorrow as i type this out, but i was curious what you guys thought the problem was. I think she might have a lot of dust or something and its causing the computer to overheat, she could have some virus that does this, i was thinking about just booting into safe mode and do my thing, or she could have a faulty PSU. I put this thread in hardware because thats best guess its something with the PSU. opinions?

Is it posible that some friend pranked her?
Maybe someone with accsess to her computer aded a shutdown script to startup...

i mean anythings possible, I've seen some weird things. She does have a few kids but i doubt they would do this. I'll look into that for sure. Thank you

Boot in safe mode first and try a clean boot if that didn't work it's probably a hardware issue .

I would try to boot up to safe mode and if it doesen't shutdown, that means there is some program on the startup that is doing this.
If it shuts down in safe mode, try booting in to a linux live CD of it works ok, than you know that there's a problem with the software not the hardware.
If it dosen't work with linux than I would check the hardware.
Btw, how old is this computer? Maybe it's full of dust and overheats...

I'll have to create a quick live CD for linux cause thats a really good idea, i think its full of dust honestly, and she wasn't clear on how old the computer is. I'm assuming its older.

I just want to add, hiren's boot CD is also nice to use, it contains a mini version of Windows XP and has tons of files to scan the PC for viruses, HDD problems or any other software related problems.

I personally don't think it's the PSU because I wouldn't expect it to boot at all if the PSU is malfunctioning.

okay so i went to the clients house today and was surprised to see she was running ubuntu shes running 16.04 and she is having a login loop, it will attempt to login but then bring you right back to the login screen, it also does the same thing when i login as guest, i tried booting in recovery mode and everything. I think what i'm going to do is run a live disk and back up everything on her hard drive and then reinstall everything.

Exactly this.

On the grounds that all data can be backed up, a clean Installation Is certainly the way to go. Just make sure there's nothing malicious (causing the system to behave erratically), otherwise upon reinstalling the OS and all data, you'll be back to square one.
