Computer Science - Computer Classification pt. 2 #1
In my first Computer Science thread, I stated that there were two types of computers: Dedicated and General Purpose. Dedicated computers don't go much further than I said they did, doing one job with no written software. General Purpose computers, however, have deeper sub-categories.

Handheld:

A handheld computer, or smartphone, is considered a computer because it runs a (mobile) OS that can change the software it's running (i.e., apps, services,etc...).

Laptop:

More often than not, laptops are considered microcomputers (which I'll get into later) that can be carried around and run on either battery or cable power. Laptops are currently my weapon of choice, seeing as they can accomplish pretty much everything you need done, if you don't cheap out on what you get.

Microcomputer:

A microcomputer is a single-user General Purpose computer with a microprocessor as it's CPU. Microcomputers are commonly referred to as Personal Computers.

Minicomputer:

A multi-user, medium sized computer that usually has higher power requirements and more software available than smaller computers. Another term for these mini-beasts is a Workstation. And no, you can't grab one of these for gaming. They run for around $15000 for a nice model.

Mainframe:

Stores and manipulates vast amounts of data and is capable of some pretty hardcore multiprocessing. These are used by large companies such as banks, airlines, and insurance companies to keep track of accounts and clients.

Supercomputer:

Used for highly calculation-intensive tasks by major Universities, military, and scientific research.

A Common Misconception:

Some people think there's no big difference between a mainframe and a supercomputer. This is very, very wrong.

Let's say you have a mainframe capable of processing 10,000 things at a time. It can accomplish the task of managing 10,000 bank accounts without a hitch. If you had a supercomputer do the same job, it would take a hell of a long time. The reason being, the supercomputer can only process one thing at a time, but it can do that one thing really fast.

Another example would be a tornado simulation. A supercomputer can process this easily, handling only one job. A mainframe would only use one processor, having no other processes to run. Because the mainframe can't handle that amount of intensity, the simulation would immediately crash.

Absolutely. As opposed to a desktop, there's nothing I can't do via a lappy.

Except CPU/GPU intensive work. Laptops are notoriously horrible to run multiple programs, intensively, at once without heating up and melting off your balls... lmao

I agree and disagree.

I made a program a while back that generates x amount of passwords using y characters. My friends were fucking around, so they decided to generate 9.9 million passwords. The program ran in about 3 minutes, and my laptop was still relatively cool. Other than draining my battery, not much happened.

The job probably could've been done slightly better on a desktop, but nothing notable. Custom PCs that can run everything in the Crysis series with advanced physics are another story.

It depends, If you're (generally speaking) willing to pay the money, you'll get a very decent lappy that'll fulfill your computational needs without any hassles.

The Dell Alienware (over-priced IMO) running SLI GTX 880 Cards, along with the OC'd 4th Gen Quad CPU @ 4.4Ghz will chew just about anything you throw at It. Given It's performance, It runs relatively cool too.

You will also need to take into account that laptop GPU and CPU card/chips aren't the same nm as desktop, and an i7 on a laptop isn't necessarily more powerful than a desktop i5, for example.

For a Dell Alienware, you could shove a fucking GTX Titan X on a desktop -.-

Honestly, though, there's something wrong with every gaming laptop. For example:
Razer - Not enough storage (256 GB SSD in the blade pro)
Alienware - Bulky as fuck
HP Omen - Looks like crap/poor specs for gaming

Much agree, there Is at least one aspect of a Gaming lappy that's a let down.

Although It performs very well, the Alienware Is a brick and as for HP, I'll never touch It again. I've had so many lose functionality hardware-wise. I was unaware of the Razer with only a 256GB HDD. Nowadays, It's a very mediocre capacity.

my laptop (link) has four times the storage. Given, it is disc, but is SSD really needed in a laptop?

Depending on one's data storage needs, generally speaking, a 1TB HDD will suffice most user's needs.

In terms of an SSD In a lappy, opting for a smaller capacity as the "Boot Drive" will significantly Increase boot times/performance. As a "Data Disk", Read & Write (I/O) operations are blazingly quicker than magnetic HDDs. The SSD will also run cooler, less prone to bad sectors (non-movable parts, dealing with pages & blocks), less wear & tear and the list goes on.

Of course, the longevity and performance of a given SSD does depend on the type of NAND Flash Memory- SLC, eSLC, MLC, eMLC & TLC. All of which are great In one aspect, but somewhat of a letdown In another. Selecting the correct type should be based on whether It's an Enterprise organization with heavy Read/Write operations, or simply a home user with minimal demands on the Disk Itself.
