Hi all, recently played Assassin's Creed а так же Five Nights at Freddy's and I had a thought. Can indie developers compete with major studios like Blizzard, Ubisoft? I think it's quite possible because big companies support their core products and rarely create anything really serious. The big studios have a funding advantage, though.

There's always going to be some comparison and market share, but I think this definitely depends on game genre and target audience. For example, in the horror genre, I think plenty of indie developers get a chance to share the limelight, as there are online communities that will try out lots of different horror games. However, I don't think you'll see the same in the Battle Royale genre.

There's also differences in how they release games, the kind of community support they run and how they may update those games down the line.

They absolutely can compete, but they are unlikely to compete in all ways. However, I would argue quality of the games themselves can be just as good, if not better (sometimes) with indie games compared to large companies. They have a very different level of pressure from investors/shareholders during the development to release process.

That's right, by the way, we still forgot about the atmosphere of the games. I notice when a game is made with soul and when it's made for the sake of making and getting money. I remember how I rejoiced when it came out Prince of Persia trilogy, Assassins Creed. That was something. But after that, something went wrong. That's purely my observation. I've been following independent developers such as technifiser.com And once again I am convinced that the indie developers can create not only games but steep modifications of existing games, which makes the game even more interesting. Indie games are made with soul and for their fans, although it's quite difficult if they have not yet found the name.
Regarding battle royale as for me, there is no need to get involved as it is difficult to compete with EpicGames and their PUBG.

"Indie" has just become a label. Every studio starts somewhere and it's not fair to compare new players to companies that had over 20 years to grow (i.e. Blizzard). A more modern example would be the growth of Mojang, the developer of Minecraft. When I was in middleschool, Minecraft was in its early Alpha days. Several years later, it was sold for $2.5 billion.

It's not just people with a golden touch like Mojang, but plenty of smaller studios are growing as we speak. Plenty of the projects start as a few friends, on a tight budget, in a basement. Success doesn't happen overnight.

It's a fair point. Every successful company was Indie in it's own right at one point. Independent developers and smaller companies in their early years may take 5-10 years before they're "household" name in the gaming industry.

Indie companies definitely can, and have. Then they go on to be big studios, or they get bought up. Its the circle of life.
