Have you tried second hand stores, Amazon or Ebay they will most likely be your best options, What do you consider great RAM? And whats your idea of cheap?
You could always try your local electronics store see what offers they have and upgrade the RAM if needed

Backtrack like most Linux distros will run on virtually anything! Up until recently I ran it from a 10 year old laptop with a 1.44Ghz single core cpu and around 512MB RAM, back to your question I wouldn't look at brands themselves but shop around and get the best specs you can afford, I had mine custom built for a reasonable price which can be done by downgrading things you don't need and increasing the things you do.

I would personally go on over to Newegg and custom build your system to fit your needs and budget. That's what I've always done for the most part and it's saved me quite the chunk of change.

I tend to buy used computers from the likes of craigslist, gumtree, or whatever your local classifieds are. i got my latest toshiba, which has a 2.53ghz Centrino2 processor with 4GB RAM for 110$AUD - Its a fairly old processor, but the ram is fine. This machine does everything i need it to for school, work, coding, etc. Im not a gamer though so it hasnt really been put through that test.
