Just curious as to what you all use to make music - if you do

I do, and for most people FL Studio is really great. Some prefer things like Ableton or Logic pro, but FL Studio is good for me

FL Studio is generally known to be a good choice. The interface isn't too complex, yet it's powerful and used everywhere.
You also have choices like Ableton, Bitwig, and others. Ableton has great controller support, and Bitwig is new.
What also matters a lot is your choice of synthesizers.
You might wanna get used to piano keys, since most MIDI controllers use a similar layout.

Anything free but better then kinda better-then-basic standard of software I could use to get a hang of things?

Nope. The free software doesn't even reach the basic standards. Reaper (https://www.reaper.fm) doesn't force you to stop using it after the trial ends, but it isn't exactly the easiest and best price of software... You can always get a cracked version of a paid piece of software though

Ever heard of anti-virus software? Also, only use cracks that have a lot of people using them. You can find some on Reddit posts, people will generally comment if something's wrong.

I have FL Studio v12.2 Producer Edition, tested just the other week, registered and fully functional.

I've yet to delve Into It's features though.
