Yes, but that doesn't spark creativity. Which is important for art.

Creativity doesn't matter at all right now. What matters is him getting the basics of art down.

The basics, as in the starting grounds, are the principles of art.

Which is creativity, as all art is build out from that. ( Think of it as a tree, creativity would be the seed/root )

I think both knowledge/understanding and creativity are important Smile The more you learn, the more opportunities and possibilities, the more creative you can be.

They interlock with each other.

Creativity doesn't mean shit if you make some shitty work.

Principles don't matter if you have nothing to put down.

Creativity is certainly important for art, but don't underestimate the importance of creativity in scientific thinking. The prominence of people with high-functioning Asperger's syndrome in both art and hard sciences (including math ) is no accident. I have known Nobel Laureates in Physics who could not change a light-bulb. Many scientists are also accomplished artists. Peter Wernicke is one of the world's top banjo pickers and has a PhD in math.

Knowledge was discovered because of creativity, the core of humanity. We adapt, we survive and we do so by analyzing and figure out the best possible way to do so through instinct. Something that's natural, we use creativity to think out our decisions. Knowledge is build from creativity, thus creativity is the basis of art and knowledge as one. ( Knowledge does help, but the very same result can be achieved with creativity alone, which comes naturally where as knowledge isn't natural. )
